The Matrix Revolutions (2003): "The human city of Zion defends itself against the massive invasion of the machines as Neo fights to end the war at another front while also opposing the rogue Agent Smith."

IMDB Ratings: 6.5/10 from 145,292 users Metascore: 47/100

2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991 also known as T2)

Terminator 2 - Arnold Schwarzenegger in chopper with gun

"The cyborg who once tried to kill Sarah Connor must now protect her teenage son, John Connor, from an even more powerful and advanced Terminator."

IMDB Ratings:  8.6/10 from 285,959 users Metascore: 68/100
Won 4 Oscars.

For better understanding of the plot and whatnot you better watch The Terminator (1984) surely its not a waste of time and a good sci-fi movie, but The Terminator didn't have the stuff to be in my top 10 sci-fi list.
After T2 we have two more movies in the series:

i)Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
ii)Terminator Salvation (2009)

Both of them are not as good as the original The Terminator or its sequel  T2, there is also a TV-series based on the events in T2 (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles).

3. Starwars
(The complete saga 1977-2005)

 The prequel trilogy...

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977): "Luke Skywalker leaves his home planet, teams up with other rebels, and tries to save Princess Leia from the evil clutches of Darth Vader."

Won Oscar.

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983): "After rescuing Han Solo from the palace of Jabba the Hutt, the Rebels attempt to destroy the Second Death Star, while Luke Skywalker tries to bring his father back to the Light Side of the Force."

IMDB Ratings: 8.3/10 from 246,348 users Metascore: 52/100

You won't be amazed by CGI in this movie or any of the Star Wars prequel trilogy movies, since in 70's n 80's CGI wasn't as advanced as now. But these movies are one of the best sci-fi movies ever made and can be considered as classic sci-fi movies.

Sequel trilogy...

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999): "Two Jedi knights uncover a wider conflict when they are sent as emissaries to the blockaded planet Naboo."

IMDB Ratings: 6.4/10 from 218,236 users Metascore: 52/100

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002): "Anakin Skywalker shares a forbidden romance with Padmé Amidala while his teacher, Obi-Wan Kenobi, makes an investigation of a separatist assassination attempt on Padmé which leads to the discovery of a secret Republican clone army."

IMDB Ratings: 6.8/10 from 180,897 users Metascore: 53/100

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005): "After three years of fighting in the Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker concludes his journey towards the Dark Side of the Force, putting his friendship with Obi Wan Kenobi and his marriage at risk."

IMDB Ratings: 7.8/10 from 205,881 users Metascore: 68/100

As you can see even with superb CGI effects the first two movies didn't got good ratings, but still I will recommend you to watch them. You can watch the Star Wars saga from episode IV to VI and then episode I to III or vice-versa. Just don't watch them selectively by ratings or in random order.

4. Iron Man
(2008)

5. Donnie Darko (2001)

I find this movie a bit weird but still a must see sci-fi.

6. Alien (1979)

Ridley Scott's Alien poster with glowing egg

IMDB Ratings: 8.5/10 from 213,458 users Metascore: 83/100

Stunning effects for a movie of 1979.

7. The Man from Earth (2007)

The Man from Earth poster - glowing human figure over earth

"An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he is an immortal who has walked the earth for 14,000 years."

IMDB Ratings: 8.0/10 from 41,852 users

It's not a movie for those who want awesome effects and stuff. It's a low budget movie, but the storyline and acting is awesome.

8. Children of Men (2006)

Clive Owen - Children of Men

"In 2027, in a chaotic world in which humans can no longer procreate, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea, where her child's birth may help scientists save the future of humankind."

IMDB Ratings: 8.0/10 from 188,887 users Metascore: 84/100

9. District 9 (2009)

District 9 poster

IMDB Ratings: 8.2/10 from 204,376 users Metascore: 81/100

Another quality low budget sci-fi film.

10. Inception (2010)

Inception poster Leonardo DiCaprio and other cast members

"In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a highly skilled thief is given a final chance at redemption which involves executing his toughest job to date: Inception."

Won 4 Oscars.

Last but surely not the least...

There are many more superb sci-fi movies that are not in this list, some of them are Moon (2009), K-PAX (2001), Contact (1997) and Solaris (2002).
